Trump has publicly criticized just about everyone — even loyalists like Mitch McConnell and Jeff Sessions. The one notable exception is Vladimir Putin.Trump has never criticized him. In fact, he goes to great lengths to defend Putin.

“Putin announced last month that Russia would expel 755 U.S. diplomats and technical personnel from the country in response to new sanctions imposed by Congress intended to punish Russia for its interference in the 2016 election. The bill passed Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support, and Trump signed it in into law, though he did so while calling it “seriously flawed” and attaching a signing statement that detailed what he deemed its ‘unconstitutional provisions.’”

Trump public criticism of his attorney general Jeff Sessions is getting most of the news today, but the real importance of Trump’s interview with the Times was Trump setting the ground for firing Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein and Special Counsel Robert Mueller, if the Russian investigation comes up with a smoking gun. Trump will characterize the investigation as part of a Democratic and establishment plot to unseat him.
