Have you ever wondered why Congress will not take action on immigration reform? Why passage of the Dream Act butts up against so much Congressional opposition? Well, just follow the money. Once you do, the reasons are bold and clear. The folks who benefit from illegal immigration are for-profit prison corporations. The three largest are Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), GEO Group (GEO), and Management and Training Corporation (MTC) in that order.

For-profit prisons depend on high incarceration rates in order to be profitable. In CCA’s 2011 report to the Securities and Exchange Commission, they express concern over any moves toward leniency in illegal drug and immigration enforcement. They fret over possible changes that would make sentencing more lenient and that would decriminalize more criminal offenses. Anything that reduces imprisonment significantly affects profits and obviously is a threat to their bottom-line.

While most of us struggle to pay our taxes with no loopholes, corporations receive immense tax breaks because of them. The Obama administration and Congress continue to talk about tax reform and closing tax loopholes. But it is way past the time when these folks needed to walk their talk and not just make empty promises they made years ago and that they continue to make to this day.

Newly seated Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren’s line of questioning at her first Banking Committee hearing on Wall Street reform was refreshing and encouraging.

After seven flummoxed and dumbfounded banking regulators were unable to answer her simple question, when did you last take Wall Street to trial, she admonished them by noting, “There are district attorneys and U.S. attorneys that are out there every day squeezing ordinary citizens on sometimes very thin ground and taking them to trial in order to make an example as they put it. I’m really concerned that too big to fail has become too big for trial. It’s just simply wrong.”

I think they were also somewhat confounded because Warren has the knowledge that makes it impossible …

The day after President Obama’s State of the Union Address, the Daily Caller published an op-ed article by Wayne LaPierre. In the piece, “Stand and Fight,” NRA’s Executive Vice President says that under President Obama there will be an economic collapse. He says that when the country goes broke there will not be adequate police protection. “Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Riots. Terrorists. Gangs. Lone criminals. These are perils we are sure to face—not just maybe. It’s not paranoia to buy a gun. It’s survival. It’s responsible behavior, and it’s time we encourage law-abiding Americans to do just that.”

Creating paranoia by peddling fear and doom, however, is precisely what the NRA and LaPierre irresponsibly do best.

Whether it is protecting the Second Amendment, universal background checks, assault weapons, or high capacity ammunition clips, their preaching is understandable once you understand NRA’s survival depends on gun and ammunition sales.

The fact is that the NRA has no earnest regard …

February 7 will be a big day for John Brennan. That’s when Obama’s nominee for director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) will appear before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Brennan has had a 25-year career with the CIA and speaks Arabic fluently. He served as deputy executive director in 2001. He is currently chief counterterrorism advisor to President Obama. Obama intended to appoint Brennan as director of the CIA in 2008. Brennan, however, withdrew his name from consideration because of accusations of support for torture/enhanced interrogation, extraordinary rendition to other countries where torture is commonplace and federal and international laws do not apply, and “black sites,” CIA’s secret prisons.

At the time, Brennan said …

All over the world, there are those who genuinely want to understand and help others in distress. They are people who have the ability to put themselves in another’s place, treating others, as they would like to be treated.

That is the essence of compassion and the meaning of The Golden Rule.

Many acts of compassion take place in everyday life.

On a cold day in Windsor, Conn., police Sgt. Todd Spencer changes a woman’s tire.

At Unionville Community High School in Bedford County, Tenn., three high school …
