Horses and ponies, chickens, ducks, geese and other animals enriched my childhood. I had a pet squirrel, goat, and even a coatimundi. My family always had pet dogs, cats and numerous litters of kittens. Such was life growing up with great grandfather, grandmother, mom, and dad. I spent considerable time playing outdoors in the woodlands and wetlands, bringing home snakes and other little creatures that lived there. My great-grandfather’s home was large with plenty of space for dogs and cats to have shelter inside and a lot of land for them to roam freely outside.

No one should be surprised or shocked over the mass shooting that took the lives of 20 schoolchildren, the school’s principle, the school’s psychologist, and 4 educators at the Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday.

On Friday, President Obama said, “As a country we have been through this too many times. And we are going to have to come together as a country and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics.”

Prior to Obama’s statement, his Press Secretary Jay Carney, responding to reporters’ questions regarding gun control, said, “today’s not the day” to have that discussion.

Of course, “today’s not the day,” and, of course, the most immediate and most important concern is to make sure that the community and victim’s families of Newtown, Connecticut are provided with everything they need to get past this heartbreaking tragedy; for the affected families I doubt that that will ever be possible.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas won overwhelming international endorsement for the establishment of a Palestinian state. Abbas has called for an end to the violence against Israel. He has acknowledged that Palestinians, who do not have an Army, Navy, or Air Force, cannot win against Israel’s overwhelming military strength.
On November 29, the United Nations General Assembly elevated the Palestinian Authority (PA) to non-member state status (Palestine previously had observer status). The United States and eight other countries voted against the resolution. Forty-one members abstained.

The U.S.  criticized the resolution. U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice said, “Today’s unfortunate and counterproductive resolution places further obstacles in the path of peace. Today’s grand pronouncements will soon fade and the Palestinian people will wake up tomorrow and find that little about their lives has changed.”

Although 138 nations may have endorsed the prospect of a Palestinian state …
